May 8 (UPI) — Max Verstappen won the inaugural Miami Grand Prix on Sunday fending off Charles Leclerc after a late crash.
Verstappen, the 24-year-old Belgian Red Bull driver, led much of the race at the Miami International Autodrome in Miami Gardens, Fla., finishing with a time of 1: 34: 24. 258, 3. 786 ahead of Leclerc.
“It’s an amazing Grand Prix.” Verstappen said about the event held in Miami. It was very physical, but we managed to keep it interesting until the last. It was an amazing Sunday and I’m so happy to have won here in Miami. “
Verstappen also earned a bonus point in the standings for notching the fastest lap in the race in 1: 31. 458.
He took a leading position by passing Carlos Sainz Jr. in the first corner of the race, and then he overtook Leclerc (Sainz’s Ferrari teammate) on the 9th lap.
By the 27th lap, Verstappen had grown his lead to 12 seconds before taking a pit stop that allowed Sainz to pass him before Verstappen took the lead once again a lap later.
Leclerc was able to take the lead after McClaren’s Lando Norris crashed into Pierre Gasly at the front.
” I believed I could reach Max in the final, but they were faster today,” Leclerc stated.
Despite being bested by Verstappen on Sunday, Leclerc still sits atop the 2022 F1 World Championship standings.
” We need to continue pushing. It will be crucial to upgrade and I believe we are now able to take a big step forward in the next race. He said that it was an exciting start to the season, and that is what we want to see.
