Since last May’s appearance at Sydney Fashion Week Romance Was Born co-founders Luke Sales & Anna Plunkett spent the past few seasons working on their digital retail business. With Australia’s most difficult tangle with COVID behind them, the co-founders of Romance Was Born, Luke Sales and Anna Plunkett, are returning to wholesale with their latest collection. A tray of Anzac biscuits was placed in the oven, which is almost a requirement on the rightfully celebrated national holiday. Sales called to discuss the clothing.
For fall 2022, they collaborated with Lara Merrett of Melbourne. Merrett is an abstract painter whose rich colors translate well from cloth to canvas. Plunkett and Sales began by looking at the art, and later built the silhouette using whatever associations they could find. They had many associations, from subsea to sci-fi. Despite their associative reach, the pieces remained Romance Was Born-ish with their irresistible waftiness & mega-feminine silhouettes.
This typically delicious oyster had grit thanks to a few looks that featured pieces not often seen: a tailored coat and some pants. According to Sales, direct-to-consumer activities had revealed an insignificant number of male customers. Plunkett and he have worked together to make their collections more accessible for all genders. Just as he teased that their next show around a fortnight hence will feature a collaboration with one of Australia’s best-loved illustrators–ping!–it was time to take those biccies out of the oven.
