Torrential Monsoon Rains Alleviate Drought

Bombay torrential rains brought some relief to the country’s drought record. This was the official start of the Monsoon Season in Korea.

Some 30 to 50 mm of rain per hour are expected across the country until early Friday morning, the Korea Meteorological Administration said.

Rain will continue in some southern parts until Saturday morning with up to 120 mm of precipitation.

But the heatwave will return on Saturday because of a high pressure front. Interspersed with brief downpours, the rains are expected to continue until next week. The rains are desperately needed. Cumulative nationwide rainfall until Tuesday was 215.9 mm, a mere 56.6 percent of the 30-year average. The KMA warns of landslides when sudden torrents cause soil to become softer. Rainy seasons last for about a month. The current pattern shows that the weather oscillates between extreme heat and thunderstorms.
